Dyslexie: Hoe een vergelijking van behandelingsstudies zijn doel voorbij geschoten is.
Het artikel van Van der Leij (2006) is een lovenswaardige poging een vergelijkend overzicht te bieden van de effecten van dyslexiebehandelingen in Nederland. Echter, het artikel wordt verlamd door problemen betreffende de populatie dyslexie, de definitie van het concept ‘effect’, een discutabele analyse, onjuiste conclusies en hiaten in het literatuuroverzicht. Dientengevolge faalt het artikel in zijn doelstelling om helderheid te bieden in de kwestie of dyslexiebehandelingen effectief zijn en of er verschillen in effectiviteit te onderkennen zijn.
Van der Leij’s article is a praiseworthy attempt to provide a comparison of studies on the effectiveness of treatments of dyslexia. Unfortunately, the article is infected by problems concerning the representativeness of the selected samples for the intended population as well as problems concerning the definition of the concept effect. Additionally, the analysis is flawed, incorrect conclusions are being made and gaps are present in the review of the literature. Consequently, the article fails in its intent to clarify whether treatments of dyslexia are effective and whether differences in effects between treatments are present.
